The Tunnel
In Anthony Browne’s beautiful picture book, we meet Rose and Jack, two siblings who do not get along too well, as they are complete opposites and are always fighting: she is an introverted reader who likes being alone, while he is always out and about playing with his friends. One day, after one of their countless quarrels, their exasperated mother sends them both out of the house. This is how the two siblings find themselves at the entrance of a tunnel and, once again, they decide to do their own thing: Jack immediately rushes into the tunnel in search of new adventures, while Rose decides to wait for him outside but, at a certain point, when her brother fails to return, she overcomes her fear and goes in to look for him. At the end of the tunnel, Rose finds herself in a surreal, scary forest inhabited by magical creatures. Like all great fairy tales, this too is a story of transformation with the tunnel representing the transitional moment of growth, which will lead the two siblings to rediscover their relationship.
